With the security threat quite high in Pakistan, when the Benazir Bhutto International Airport in Islamabad was refurbished it was equipped with an additional blast-proof wall. A new taxiway link of about 1,700 ft by 75 ft was added and also a lounge. The new Business Class Lounge that was formerly known as Rawal Lounge has an overall new look with contemporary and sleek furniture as well as high-speed internet with Wi-Fi. Speaking about the new look that is estimated to have cost Rs 450 million and a period of nine months the Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that there were additions that were meant to make the passengers comfortable while offering convenience at the same time. The taxi link was created adjacent to the lone runway since it is meant reduce the waiting time of the craft while taking off or landing. It is estimated that it will help the airlines to save Rs 120 m per month, yearly it will help in saving Rs 1 billion.
The Civil Aviation Authority leased a piece of land from the military in order to construct a new car park for all the staffs working at the airport. While following cnbc live you may have seen that passengers who do not carry a lot of luggage will enter and leave the airport without a hassle considering that a fast track section was added. Just to ensure that the airport has better security for the passengers, the space between the car park and the main terminal is separated by a blast-proof wall. To create more space, all the offices of different airlines have been centralized. Initially, the food stalls and the offices were located at the Concourse Hall but were demolished as they minimized the space for the passengers, those who came to receive them and those that came to see them off.
The facelift may have been brought by a survey that indicated the airport did not have control of the crowd, it was inconsistent when it came to security checks, it was more of a prison than an airport and all this contributed to it being the worst airport in the world. The country has been working on improving and developing the infrastructure as it is said that come the last quarter of the year 2016, the New Islamabad Airport will be opened as per the statement that was given to the National Assembly by the Aviation Division. While it will be open to the public, the current one will be used for domestic flights as well as by the VVIP and the Army Force of Pakistan. As of now, the project that was estimated to cost Rs 31 billion but is said that it will cost more than Rs 80 billion due to the inflation is 80 percent complete. So far the project is said to have cost Rs 40 billion. The upgraded facility of the Benazir Bhutto International Airport was inaugurated on Monday prime minister of the country.
