The motorised bicycle idea has been around for quite some time and dates back to the late 1800’s. Adding a motor to a basic bicycle frame to do some or all of the pedalling for you (when you’re tired or just simply need a rest, but keep on going) makes the whole bicycling experience that much easier. At first the inventors of the time were excited with the idea of a motorised bicycle, and in the 1800’s there were a number of patents for a selection of motors. And in a weird twist of fate, most of these same motors wouldn’t be looked at again right up until the early 1990’s, almost 100 years later. Fate is an odd thing, eh?
The motorised bicycle has now become regarded as environmentally friendly, which has definitely added to their popularity. They are more and more often referred to as light electric vehicles or as you may have heard, “ebikes.” And no, they’re not motorcycles in disguise, as they differ to motorcycles, motorcycles don’t have pedals to fall back on to power the vehicle, and the machine clearly looks just like your average bicycle.
More and More in Demand
In the West, there is certainly a spike in demand for these ebikes. In many countries where bicycles are already a popular means of transport, they had nearly as many motorised bicycles as there were other vehicles on the road in the mid 1990’s. Ebikes are the most popular and places such as China have been selling them by the millions since the start of this century.
In the UK, there are companies such as Roodog who have helped people overcome their fear of bicycling long journeys and giving them the courage to take on treacherous hills due to the easy option of letting the motor take over and do the work. Simple as that, and what could be more convenient? If you fancy a little bit of good old fashioned exercise, simply go back to pushing those pedals.
The Future is Here
While the ebike is quickly becoming the most popular type of transport around the planet, it does make one wonder why on Earth it took so long for them to get on the road, especially seeing that they are a much more efficient and clean type of getting around. With the newer and more developed type of batteries which are longer lasting and lighter, you can ride easily for around 30 odd miles There is a distinction in the source of power an electric motorized bicycle has available.
The ebike won’t be outselling conventional vehicles yet in the UK, at least, any time soon, but their popularity is certainly ongoing. And you may already know that as a hobby, ebikes have become extremely popular which has allowed people to form small clubs to share modification information.
So, what are you waiting for? “Get on your bike” never sounded cooler!
