Scientists in the United States claim that drinking red wine may help people with excess weight burn fat better while at the same time improving liver function. However, a newer study indicates that the effects of fat burning may not be as considerable. Also, consuming particular red grapes or drinking their juice may offer the same benefits. Dr. Neil Shay, who is a renowned biochemist, and molecular biologist at Oregon State University states that the study indicates that Muscadine grapes may help people with weight management and other related metabolic disorders. However, there is still no ample evidence of such thus it is not recommended to consume red wine just for weight loss.

Grapes contain ellagic acid that has been shown to slow significantly in the growth of existing fat cells and at the same slow down formation of new fat cells. In a similar study conducted on overweight mice, a specific type of red grape extract with ellagic acid has been shown to offer health improvements. The amount used would be around 1.5 cups of grapes per day for a person. Aside from ellagic acid, other chemicals that bind to PPAR-alpha and PPAR-gamma nuclear hormone receptors promoting the metabolism of fat and sugar within cells.

There is still no substantial evidence that red wine has a considerable effect in fat burning. Thus, it is still not advisable to start drinking red wine for the purpose of burning body fat.
