Due to the nature of how homeowners and businesses get electricity and gas, there really is not much in the way of options. You have your local utility company and that’s about it. Well, what if you are not satisfied with the service or rate hikes that tend to happen every single winter? Where else could you go for your power needs? Most people simply have to pay the bill and there is no recourse.
However, this could be changing through the increase in deregulation of the energy industry. This deregulation is slowly allowing other energy suppliers to enter local markets and offer alternative solutions for homeowners and businesses. Just like any market, prices for services are put in “check” and innovation increases whenever competition increases. That’s capitalism at work.
Currently, companies like American Power & Gas have been slowly entering areas of the country, offering their alternative energy solutions. Many of these new companies offer more environmentally friendly energy compared to local utility companies. I know we are all familiar with our current utility companies (and the bills!), but you may want to see if you have other options in your area. Below are three great reasons why should look into any other alternatives.
You may be able to get better customer service
Raise your hand if you have ever called your local utility company with questions about your bill, only to be put on hold? Part of the problem with having a monopoly over the local energy market is that the local utility companies don’t really need to make customer service a priority. If they don’t take good care of their customers there is no other option, and they know this. You have to continue to pay your bill with them or they will simply shut off your power. With deregulation, other companies will enter the market and be looking for value added services to attract customers. One of those value added services will be customer service.
If you switch your service there will not be any interruptions
Deregulation does not affect the distribution of energy. It only has an effect on who supplies it. You see, the energy you get is already in place. Deregulation simply gives you the option of getting it from one of a number of suppliers. If you decide that you want to change services from your local utility company, then you will just get a bill from a different company. There is no need to install new pipes or go without energy for even a single hour. The transition is very smooth and quite convenient
Take advantage of discounts and offerings of different suppliers
When was the last time you saw your local utility company offering a discount on their services? The answer is probably never because they have no incentive to. In a competitive energy market, companies will offer money-saving incentives to try and earn your business. Its basic marketing in that people will compete for your business using an “angle” that most people will respond to – money. This type of market competition is how you can really save some money on your monthly bill.
